Getting Around Barbados

Getting around the island of Barbados is relatively easy, with several transportation options available to visitors.  We always hire a car as it makes life so much easier to get from A to B without having to wait around, everything in Barbados is on island time apart from restaurant reservations!  Something to remember when you're looking into transport.  The traffic is also bad during rush hour so either avoid these times or plan a longer journey time accordingly.  Overall, transportation here is convenient and accessible, with options to suit every budget and preference.

TOP TIP for using the buses in Barbados...

There are only two directions, towards Bridgetown (To City) and away from Bridgetown (Out Of City), it's as easy as that!

Renting a car...

Renting a car is a popular option for visitors who want the flexibility to explore the island at their own pace. There are numerous car rental agencies located at the airport and in major towns and tourist areas, or you can ask your acommodation provider if there is a local company you can use to support smaller businesses. In Barbados they drive on the same side of the road as here in the UK and they are easy to navigate. If you don't fancy adding sat nav to your car hire then a simple paper map will do the job and it is quite hard to get lost.  There are a lot of pot holes on the smaller roads so make sure you opt for fully comp when booking so you don't get any nasty surprises.

Taxis...

In Barbados, private taxis are a popular and convenient mode of transportation for both locals and tourists alike.  Private taxis are readily available throughout Barbados, particularly in popular tourist areas such as Bridgetown, St. Lawrence Gap, Holetown, Speightstown and the west coast resorts. You can find taxis stationed at major hotels, shopping centres, and tourist attractions, or you can simply flag one down on the street.  There are regular taxis which are usually metered and private taxis which operate on a negotiated fare basis. Both types of taxis are licensed by the Barbados Government and are generally safe and reliable.  We strongly suggest pre booking taxis in Barbados.

Pick UP...

Just like Uber this is an app based service. Pick Up Barbados represents a shift towards modern, tech-driven transportation on the island. Whether you're a local resident needing a quick ride or a tourist looking to explore, this Uber-style service provides a convenient, safe, and affordable way to get around Barbados.

Transport Board Buses...

The Transport Board buses in Barbados are an essential part of the island's public transportation system, providing affordable and reliable services to residents and visitors alike. These bus routes cover almost every corner of the island and are affordable with fixed fares regardless of the distance travelled. Passengers pay in cash directly to the driver when boarding the bus and exact change is appreciated.  They have a scheduled timetable with buses at regular intervals throughout the day. You can find the routes and timetables online, at bus terminals, and at bus stops across the island.  These buses play a crucial role in providing accessible, affordable, and reliable public transportation services to residents and visitors in Barbados, contributing to the island's vibrant transportation network.

ZRs...

In Barbados, the yellow mini-buses are commonly known as "ZR vans" or "ZRs." These privately operated minibuses operate on specific routes throughout the island, covering both urban and rural areas. Each van typically operates along a designated route, picking up and dropping off passengers at established bus stops or designated points along the route.  The fixed fare is paid in cash to the driver at the start of your journey.  This a cultural experience unique to Barbados, the vans are often equipped with loud music systems, and drivers may play soca, reggae, or calypso music, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere during the journey. Passengers may also engage in lively conversations with fellow passengers, further adding to the cultural experience.

Maxi Taxis...

Maxi Taxis are larger than traditional ZR vans but smaller than full-sized buses. They typically accommodate around 15 to 20 passengers.  They are white or beige in colour and may have a distinct signage indicating their route or destination. While they may not be as flashy or decorated as ZR vans, they are still easily recognisable by their size and appearance.  Passengers typically pay the affordable fare directly to the driver upon boarding the vehicle, these provide locals and visitors with a convenient, cost-effective, and efficient mode of getting around the island, particularly for those traveling along specific routes or in larger groups.

Private Cars...

Private chauffeur-driven cars in Barbados typically consist of high-end vehicles such as luxury sedans, SUVs, or even limousines. These vehicles are well-maintained, spacious, and equipped with amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable ride.  The chauffeurs who operate these private cars are highly trained, experienced, and professional individuals. They are knowledgeable about the island, its attractions, and its road networks, ensuring that passengers reach their destinations safely and efficiently.  Hiring a private chauffeur-driven car provides convenience and flexibility, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy their journey without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads or dealing with traffic. Chauffeurs handle all aspects of transportation, including route planning, parking, and navigation, allowing passengers to focus on their activities or events.
